New website helps residents stay independent in their homes for longer

A modern and vibrant website has been designed to help keep residents independent in their homes longer and to improve the customer experience when seeking information about adult social care.

Adult social care is changing the way the council offers support and advice and a new operating model is being delivered through Your Life, Your Way, a programme designed to drive the best outcomes for residents and ensure the right support is delivered at the right time. It will also enable the council to manage demand within the system whilst effectively managing resources across adult social care for the people who need them.

Finding the right advice and information is also important for individuals who care for a relative or friend and it is recognised that East Riding carers also need timely and bespoke information in order to support them in their caring role.

Councillor Kerri Harold, portfolio holder for adult and carer services at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “We have developed the new website to provide early information, advice about community support and services and how to get help from the council.

“It promotes choice and control and helping people to maximise their strengths and live their life well.

“The website will also provide information and self-help tools that residents regularly ask our front-line and customer service teams for, therefore reducing the number of contacts we receive regarding requests for information and signposting.

“Providing this through our newly-designed website aims for a better customer experience and to ensure our assessment teams are focussing on those individuals who have eligible care and support needs.

“So we are simply improving our pathways to help residents to access information about adult social care and to determine what support they may need – whether it’s preventative or longer-term support.

“We would really like to receive your feedback so we can continuously improve this new and exciting resource.”

It is hoped residents will find the website user-friendly, easy to navigate and that it promotes better understanding of the options available to the and reinforces the council’s prevention and early intervention offer, strengthening the council’s duties under the Care Act 2014 to provide information and advice to local residents.

The website is in what’s called the ‘Beta’ phase at the moment; this means it is live and can be tested to gather feedback from residents to improve it further.

Adult social care’s new website includes more online tools that residents can use, such as a financial calculator and a community directory of support services.

Residents urged to complete survey on fast food litter in the East Riding

Residents in the East Riding are being encouraged to complete an online survey about fast food litter.

The waste and recycling team at East Riding of Yorkshire Council is asking people to take part in the consultation to air their views on how the littering of packaging from fast food outlets affects the area.

The team is looking to gather the opinions of residents, local businesses, visitors, and parish and town councils on the impact of this particular problem.

Councillor Chris Matthews, the council’s portfolio holder for environment and climate change, said: “We would really appreciate residents helping us by filling out the survey. Litter is a major issue for every local authority.

“At East Riding of Yorkshire Council, we spend around £3.9million per year cleaning up litter, and many residents feel strongly about this problem, with several volunteer litter picking groups active in areas including Bridlington, Beverley and Hessle.

“A major contributor to the amount of litter on our streets, our roadsides and in parks and play areas, is packaging waste dropped by customers using fast food outlets.

“This is often waste which could otherwise be easily recycled if it was disposed of properly.

“It’s often difficult to identify the people who dropped it, and can be very unsightly in communities where the outlets are based.

“So we need people to help us try to get on top of the issue”

The survey takes less than five minutes to complete and asks for views about the area you live, what your opinions are of litter and some suggested solutions to the problem.

To complete the survey, visit the website www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/LitterSurvey/

Please send responses by 15 April 22.

Reduced cost insulation in the East Riding

Residents in the East Riding are being offered the opportunity to install cavity wall and loft insulation for just £99 to homeowners and private sector tenants.

Heat Insulation Ltd, a family owned, and local company established for 30 years, have gained access to funding to install the cavity wall insulation and loft insulation for just £99 each insulation installed. The funding is via a partnership between ScottishPower, Heat Insulation and East Riding of Yorkshire Council and is limited to a first come, first served basis.

Heat Insulation Ltd deliver insulation measures to thousands of homes in the Hull and East Riding area on behalf of the council, Hull City Council and various housing associations and landlords. During winter it is essential to keep warm and healthy and making your home more energy-efficient and insulated will help you achieve this.

Due to further partnership working, they are now also able to access funding to insulate rooms in roof spaces and internal wall insulation providing they fit specific criteria set out in Ofgem guidance. However, this service is NOT eligible for the £99 scheme and is subject to the property and occupant qualifying for this funding.

The first step would be to carry out a technical survey and if your home is suitable then the works are then booked in for install at a mutually convenient time. Upon completion of cavity wall insulation, you will receive a 25-year CIGA Guarantee.

If you think you may require insulation to your home or require more information on the funding they can offer, please contact Heat Insulation Ltd to book your free survey on 01482 588591. You can also apply online at www.heat-insulation.co.uk, quoting “ERYCInsulation”.

A resident from Willerby, who has successfully applied for the scheme, said: “We are very pleased with the scheme. We have found the house retains heat during the day and also at night the temperature does not go down much.

“We found Heat Insulation Ltd very helpful and the workers carried out their work in a professional manner.”

The East Riding Housing Needs Survey is now live!

A chance to tell East Riding of Yorkshire Council about your current home and what the future need for housing might be in your household. Your views as a resident of East Riding are important to us and the information you provide will help us to build a comprehensive picture of the need for homes in our area and help us to ensure we meet the needs of our diverse communities.

The East Riding Housing Needs Survey will allow us to capture a high quality and realistic view of the pressures which our residents might be facing in relation to housing – either for themselves or members of their household. You may have concerns about whether you would be able to afford a new home or you may live in a home that’s too large or small for your needs. It may be that you have a family member who wants to move out and start living by themselves but hasn’t yet been able to do so. Equally, you may be happy in your current home but we would still like to hear from you.

The information we gather from this survey will feed into a project which will allow the Council to establish the level of housing need in our area as well as what type of need there is. The evidence will support policies to be set out in the East Riding Local Plan which is currently being updated and will provide valuable evidence when planning applications are reviewed with reference to the type, tenure and general mix of a housing development.

The survey can be accessed by the weblink www.tinyurl.com/22HNSS. The time taken will depend on your individual household circumstances, but we suggest the average will be 7 – 10 minutes. Responses will be anonymous, but we do ask for data about where you currently live to help us to see where the need for homes is.

The survey will be open until 22 April 2022.

Right of Way Improvement Plan consultation survey now live

East Riding of Yorkshire Council is asking residents to contribute to the ‘Rights of Way Improvement Plan’ (ROWIP) consultation survey as the authority sets out the overall direction of travel and aims for the development of the public rights of way network in East Yorkshire.

The council reassesses the ROWIP every ten years and makes amendments to it if necessary. It does not include details for individual improvements or addresses specific locations, but it helps to guide council officers and the voluntary and community sector partners in the development of a network that is more relevant to more people.

The survey includes multiple statements on which residents can enter a response which ranges between strongly agree and strongly disagree.

The council is currently updating the ROWIP to reflect important changes in the benefits that our countryside paths provide. For example, the health and well-being, active travel, leisure and recreation, and the social and economic value that the network provides.

Here is the draft consultation version of the ROWIP:

Draft Rights of Way Improvement Plan 2022-2032 (pdf 3.2mb)

Residents can have their say via the consultation pages on the council’s website: Have your say on the ROWIP or by emailing definitive.map@eastriding.gov.uk by 31 March 2022.

Based on information and comments received during the consultation process, the Statement of Action will provide a framework for managing the network, rather than providing solutions to individual cases, and will identify priorities for improving public rights of way, in line with the needs of all types of users.

Councillor Claire Holmes, portfolio holder for planning, infrastructure and housing at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “Being able to enjoy time in a natural environment is really important for our mental health and wellbeing.  It reduces, stress, fatigue, anxiety and depression.

“Enjoyed alone, being more active can help boost immune systems and may reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as asthma. Enjoyed with others, it can combat loneliness and bind communities together.

“This survey is an opportunity for our residents to get involved in the strategic planning when it comes to managing our networks.

“Though it doesn’t include details for specific locations, it will give a good guide to the opinion of residents on a range of topics so adjustments can be made to the Rights of Way Improvement Plan to benefit all different types of users of our networks.”
